Blakely's birth story

Blakely arrived very quickly and full of drama to say the least!

I had been having contractions for a couple of weeks but nothing consistent so I figured the same was happening yesterday (Sunday) morning.  At about 7am I woke up feeling the same ole contractions. I think they were about 10-15 min apart.  I finally got up and was going to get myself and Boston ready for church, Kyle had gone to play golf with his dad.  At this point the contractions were about 8 min apart but no more painful than usual so I assumed they would eventually go away.  They weren't letting up so I called Kyle's mom to come get Boston and take him to church.  I continued to get ready and the contractions got stronger and closer together so I called kyle home.  We packed up and headed to L&D. All this time I was thinking "I bet we get sent home" since I was just at 2cm on Thursday and my contractions only started a few hours ago."
We got there at 11:00 and went straight back to a room and waited. and waited. and waited to get hooked up to the monitors, etc.  The nurse finally checked me around noon (mid contraction) and said I was only at 2.5cm!  I thought this can't be!  She proceeded to call my Dr and we continued to wait while my contractions kept getting stronger and closer together.  I guess I have a pretty high tolerance for pain because by the time my Dr got there to check me (30 minutes later) I was at 6cm!  They were in shock!  At this point I still had no meds or IV's.  They immedialtely hooked me up to the IV, broke my water, and gave me stadol.  My Dr left to go put her scrubs on and we had to wait for my labs to get back before I could get the epidural.  During that time the contractions got SO STRONG!  The nurse antethesis(sp?) finally got there and I was sobbing in pain and could barely talk.  He kept asking me questions, telling me to move this way, that way, etc.  I wanted to punch him in the face and say "get on with it!"  He could clearly see I was in pain I was almost screaming at this point and he was taking his precious time.  While he was putting the epidural in, I felt the need to push a couple of times and I literally thought I was going to have her right then.  I could feel everything!  The minute he was finished the nurse checked me and I was at 10cm and ready to go!  My dr was not back yet and the meds were not kicking in at all.  They went to get more meds to calm me down I guess b/c at this point I was screaming/crying and thought I was going to pass out or die.  Seriously.
The nurses were actually preparing to deliver her when my Dr shows up.  I pushed about 6 times and out she came at 2:11pm (remember we got there at 11am and i got checked at noon)!  However, the cord was wrapped so tightly around her neck, Dr had to immediately cut the cord to loosen it.  She was blue and not responsive.  Scared me to death!!!  The nurses took her over and bagged her (oxygen, etc) after what seemed like forever, i heard her cry!  They called in someone from NICU to clear out her lungs and work on her breathing some more. Apparently the cause of all of this was the fact that they had given me so much stadol right before she was born that it affected Blakely, plus the fact she came out so fast the cord tightened around her neck abruptly.
When she was finally in the clear they brought her to me and she immediately started feeding and wanted to do so the rest of the afternoon!  The rest of the family didn't get to come back until about 4:30 b/c of all the chaos.
Boston was so excited and proud of his little sister!  It was so cute and melted my heart!  Priceless moment for sure!
For the rest of the afternoon/night Blakely seemed to be trying to get used to life on the outside.  She was very fussy and wanted to eat all. the. time.  I got maybe 2 hours of sleep last night.
Today has been a MUCH better day!  I have actually had to wake her up to eat!  The hospital wants her to eat every 3 hours because she is so small and tested positive for Coombs(higher possibility for jaundice).
She did great on all of her tests today and we should be going home tomorrow!

As far as myself is concerned, I must say that my recovery this time has been much better than with Boston.  She came out so quickly and I pushed so much less this time (over an hour with Boston).  I didn't have to get stitches this time and I think it has made a world of difference.  Most of my pain has actually been in my back.

So yesterday was definitely a whirlwind and one to never be forgotten!

We love you so much baby girl and can't imagine our family without you!

Hi Courtney, congrats on the new baby girl. I check your blog every once in a while since Boston and Gibson are so close in age and to see if I can get ideas on how to handle a rowdy 2 and a half year old boy - the pottytraining is about to wear me down. I remembered from Meredith's shower that you were due some time soon. Did you deliver at Baptist in LR? Only asking because I delivered there about 2 months ago and had a similar experience with nursing staff and nurse anethesist. I was going in to be induced. Got there at 7:00 am, nurse seemed distracted and disorganized. She basically refused to check me and said she preferred to wait on doctor who got there at 8:30. I was 4 cm and 75% effaced but no regular contractions. Broke my water, started IVs, and pitocin. That really kicked up the pain level and contractions. Around 10:00 the barely present nurse said it looked like I was ready for my epidural just based on my facial expressions. She never checked me again, when nurse anethesist arrived he seemed more focused on badmouthing the hospital budget cuts than preparing my epidural. It took him several tries, poked me in two different spots - process lasted 15 minutes I think. I was having very strong contractions during all of this. At 10:30 he started the epi drip, stayed in the room to see if my legs started tingling and when I said I could still feel pain really low almost like I had to use the bathroom, they realized I might be having that urge to push. A different nurse asked when I was last checked and when I said 8:30 she went ahead and checked me, I was 9.5 cm. I had to cross my legs to keep from pushing her out before the doctor could get there. Miller was born at 10:46 after 2 pushes. She was a tiny one too, she was 5 lbs 7 oz at birth and 18.5 inches long. She's just now up to 7 1/2 lbs and she'll be 7 weeks old tomorrow. I keep wondering if the epidural ever took effect since she was born about 15 minutes after he inserted the medicine. We weren't very happy with the level of care we received during delivery and in recovery. Anyways, I thought it was funny how we had such similar experiences. They always say it's a lot faster the second time but I never thought it would be that fast.

I love your quote "I just wanted to punch him in the face and tell him to get on with it." I know that feeling all to well! I hope your recovery continues to be wonderful. Get some rest =)
